Bringing home a new puppy is such an exciting time, but the car ride home can be a little nerve-wracking for both you and your new furry friend. Whether it’s their first time in a car or they’re just adjusting to the motion, here are a few tips to make the journey smoother for everyone.

1. Bring Something Familiar

One of the easiest ways to help your new puppy feel more comfortable is to bring along a blanket or item with the scent of their mom. This helps ease anxiety and gives them something familiar to snuggle up with during the ride. Just ask me and I can set something aside!

2. Prepare for Accidents

Puppies can sometimes get car sick or just be nervous, which may lead to accidents along the way. I always set up a sheet protector in the hatchback of my car to help keep things clean. I also make sure to have paper towels and a bottle of white vinegar (or non-toxic cleaner like Simple Green) on hand to clean up any messes quickly. For car sickness, Dramamine can be an option.

3. Take Frequent Breaks

Just like us, puppies need breaks during long car rides. Stopping for a potty break and a quick stretch is a good idea, especially when your puppy is still adjusting to travel. If your puppy falls asleep, don't wait too long after they wake up — take them for a quick "tinkle" to avoid accidents in the car.

4. Stay Calm and Confident

Puppies are great at picking up on our energy, so staying calm and relaxed will help reassure them. Even though the car ride may be a little overwhelming at first, they’ll settle in as the journey continues.

Traveling with a puppy can be an adventure, but with the right preparations, the car ride home can be as smooth as possible.

Stay tuned for next week’s post where we’ll dive into tips for flying with a puppy — a whole different kind of adventure!
